Physiological Testing
The Fitness Laboratory is a state-of-the-art lab designed to assess the physiological effects of exercise on the human body. Data from laboratory testing provides precise and accurate answers to the following questions:
- What is my body fat percentage?
- What is my “fat burning” range?
- How many calories do I burn at rest?
- How many calories do I burn during exercise?
- What is my ideal target heart rate?
- How fit am I?
- What is my cholesterol level?
- Where do I stand compared to others my age?
The purpose of the Fitness Laboratory is to provide scientific support to those striving to achieve improved performance, health and wellness. The program includes testing, other assessments and a consultation with a certified exercise physiologist who will interpret test data, provide tips on how to apply your results and make your exercise/training program as successful as possible.
Body Composition Analysis
Body composition analysis determines the amount of lean tissue and body fat percentage. Body composition should be analyzed routinely to test the effectiveness of an exercise and/or nutrition program. The Fitness Laboratory is equipped to perform:
- Skinfold Measures
- Bioelectrical Impedance
- Underwater Weighing
VO 2 max (Maximal Oxygen Uptake)
VO 2 max testing is the gold standard for testing cardiovascular endurance. Analyzing expired gases during exercise provides essential physiological information to optimize training and exercise prescriptions. VO 2 max test data can determine ventilatory threshold (anaerobic threshold) the point at which fatigue begins. Whether your goal is performance related or simply “fat-burning”, an appropriate training heart rates can be determined from test data. A typical VO 2 max test will provide the following information:
- VO 2 Max (aerobic capacity)
- Vertilatory Threshold (anaerobic threshold)
- Calories burned during exercise
- Fuels utilized during exercise (fat, carbohydrate, protein)
- Appropriate heart rate zones
Submaximal Aerobic Fitness Testing
Periodic submaximal aerobic fitness testing will help you determine whether your fitness level is improving. These tests are not as demanding as a VO 2 max test, yet they provide enough information to verify that your aerobic exercise plan is effective.
Resting Metabolic Rate
Resting metabolic rate is the number of calories burned during rest. This information is essential for individuals initiating a weight loss or weight gain program. In addition, a computerized nutritional analysis investigates your current eating behavior and pinpoints where improvement is needed. Our Nutrition Educator will analyze your current diet along with your metabolic rate and get you on the right track.
CHAMP
CHAMP consists of a battery of tests that evaluate your overall fitness. This evaluation is a necessity for those who are beginning their fitness program or want feedback on the effectiveness of their program. Tests include:
- Submaximal Aerobic Fitness Testing
- Blood Lipid Analysis
- Body Composition
- Muscular Strength and Endurance
- Flexibility
Prior to your initial visit, you must complete the Health History Questionnaire
Once you start the CHAMP program you can track your progress in our CHAMP online module.
